Keeping It Up Despite the Downturn

LNG is one of the fastest growing sectors in global shipping however the current economic crisis has taken its toll on delays in new LNG productions plants, shrinking LNG demand and surplus in carrying capacity. Coupled with evolution of technology in LNG sector and limited pool of skilled LNG carrier operators, managing LNG transportation has become more challenging than ever. Staying afloat and strong in the midst of the dismal market remains the top agenda for anyone in this business. Find out and determine the strategy, approach and plan you need to have in place to brace the current market, be prepared beyond the economic and financial contagion and be in the forefront of industry development.

Taking a center stage at the Singapore’s MPA Maritime Week, Asia Business Forum, a Euromoney PLC company,is pleased to present LNG Shipping Asia Conference that will bring you up to speed with critical market development on the existing LNG trade and vessels deployments in Asia.

28th – 30th April 2009 | The Grosvenor Victoria Hotel, London, UK

Overview

The only collaborative forum that shares the most recent findings and analysis on piracy to ensure sustainable operational procedures that will minimise your risk of attack

How to effectively coordinate with Naval Forces

Ensure early identification of suspect vessels and learn how discourage attack

Recognise and extract factual worldwide information available to reduce risk

Examine the most recent piracy trends and tactics

Ensure the safety of your staff, contracts, assets and reputation

Understand thelegal implicationswhen under attack. Minimise risk to hostages and discuss ransom negotiations

Discuss the challenges in evaluating available protection

Identify future training, contingency planning and insurance needs

Why Attend?

The protection of assets and crew from piracy and armed attacks is probably the single most pressing issue facing in the shipping industry. The problem is unlikely to ease; significant increases in commercial shipping are likely over the next few decades, while piracy remains closely linked to a shortage of onshore economic opportunities. There is a lot that individual shipping operators can do to maintain vigilance and to mitigate the risk of being a target of pirate attack.

Although, the long term permanent solution almost certainly resides in the hands of politicians, we need to use every opportunity to minimise risk in the short term.

The greater the level of coordination and cooperation between all stakeholders, the better the chance of protecting people and business interests. It is also vital that the industry collaborates to maintain momentum for finding permanent solutions.

Therefore this important conference has emerged from the urgent need to share with you the most effective tactics to:

Evaluate your risk in commercial and absolute terms

Identify and avoid threat during a passage

Transfer risk away from your vessels

Best prepare and protect your crew

Rapidly access support in the event of an incident

Maximise positive outcomes by taking correct action in the first few hours of a crisis

Establish an effective communication strategy with key stakeholders both internal and external

You’ll hear the latest military intelligence on pirate behaviour as well as gain up to the minute briefings on current international action.

Who you will meet at Combating Piracy 09

You’ll meet the leading worldwide shipping security experts from within the merchant marine community. Heads of Security, Safety, Quality and Environment as well as Risk and Crisis Directors from the shipping industry will attend. You’ll also have the chance to meet leading security firms, legal advisors, insurers and risk consultants to help your organisation drive your anti-piracy strategies forward. Interactive and networking sessions at this event will guarantee that you will meet not only the other attendees but also the expert speaker panel. Bring plenty of business cards!

GLOBAL OFFSHORE INDUSTRY CONVERGES ON COPENHAGEN

The “mce DEEPWATER DEVELOPMENT” 2009 technical conference is, for the first time, to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark. It features a packed technical programme and is supported by an exhibition showcasing the world’s major companies operating within the deepwater sector.

Hosted by Maersk Oil and organized by Quest Offshore, this year’s conference will see Maersk Oil’s CEO, Thomas Thune Anderson, welcoming the international delegates and presenting the conference’s keynote speech.

Paul Hillegeist, President of Quest comments, “We at Quest are delighted that Maersk Oil is to be this year’s host and I believe this conference will provide a platform to address the exciting challenges faced by this sector of the global oil industry.”

Quest Offshore is a leading source for strategic deepwater market information and Paul will be presenting a global deepwater market overview during the Conference. According to Quest Offshore, the current estimate of 2009 Global Deepwater Spend is $164 billion, the oil price is hovering around $40/bbl and major discoveries for example, offshore West
Africa, Brazil, Malaysia and in the US Gulf, should lead to renewed impetus in the deepwater sector.

There is much to discuss in Copenhagen 31st March/2 April 2009, with twin track technical sessions scheduled to give delegates access to a range of presentations featuring deepwater solutions from floating production to insulation and flowlines, subsea processing, plus riser, drilling and well technologies.

As Marine Money follows the turbulent behaviour of the financial and shipping markets with great attention, they also announce, together with anchor sponsor Geden Lines, the Finance forum will take place at the Swissotel – The Bosphorus, Istanbul.

Turkey has seen five years of expansion in shipping and port development. The good times have abruptly come to an end with the financial crisis and the resultant falling off in the container and dry bulk shipping sectors and with the tanker market also expected to weaken in 2009. This conference will bring together financiers and practitioners to discuss what went wrong, how best to sustain the pressure and be in a position to take advantage of market opportunities which always arise in a crisis.

Next year, 2009, will be an interesting year in shipping and for the global economy. Don’t miss the premier ship finance conference in Turkey on 30th April 2009. Marine Money is currently building its Event Agenda – with up to the moment issues pertaining to the shipping markets and the increasingly fragile financial markets – and further notification of this Event Agenda together with registration details will be sent as soon as is possible.

There is still some time to finalise the Event Agenda so if you have any ideas about issues to be discussed at the conference, please let Marine Money know by return mail.
The Shipping China Energy conferences are now well known for their willingness to tackle the hard issues facing the maritime sector in China. This annual shipping event offers participants a genuinely open debating platform for discussions.

Following the success of this year’s event, plans are already underway for the 2009 edition of the Shipping China Energy Conference.

China’s contribution to the current shipping boom was analyzed, discussed and debated at Shipping China Energy 2008 conference in Shanghai, now in it’s 5th year. Leading figures from both maritime and energy sectors heard presentations from key figures shaping China’s future energy activities and the commercial opportunities arising for the maritime industry.

Speaking at the opening of the Shipping China Energy Conference in Shanghai today, TradeWinds publisher Trond Lillestolen commented ‘China is the biggest consumer of oil after the US and also the biggest producer and consumer of coal. The country is thirsting for energy alternatives to coal and oil are now in focus, with 30 new nuclear energy plants expected to be commissioned in China over the next 15 years.’

The agenda for Shipping China Energy 2008 included sessions on the key issues of interest to shipping companies:

“The energy outlook for China – matching supply with demand

“China’s LNG strategy – supply contracts and the LNG fleet requirement

“The changing pattern of coal imports and exports

“The shipbuilding challenge: moving towards high tech ships

“Financing and the changing role of international capital providers

Delegates at this years conference were particularly fortunate to hear presentations from Mr Hu Weiping, Director, Bureau of Energy – National Development and Reform Commission, PRC and Professor Wang Jiacheng, Deputy Director, Academy of Macroeconomic Research, State Development and Reform Commission.

The conference attracted many of shipping’s leading personalities including Ulf Ryder, CEO of Stockholm listed Stena Bulk, Jean-Bernard Raoust, CEO of leading French shipbroker Barry Rogliano Salles and Italian Guiseppe Bottiglieri, President of Giuseppe Bottiglieri di Navigazione.

Social networking was also on the agenda with several high profile corporate receptions being organised for delegates including the spectacular ‘East meets West’ Golden Ocean Norwegian Seafood Evening, featuring specially imported Norwegian seafood prepared by Michelin starred chef Eivind Hellstrom and Singapore’s most internationally known chef, Justin Quek. Browse through the Event Gallery for images.

Shipping China Energy is a joint venture project, organised by leading maritime knowledge companies, TradeWinds and Mare Forum.

Where: Shanghai, China

When: April 23-24, 2009
