A Smarter Nor-Shipping

We believe that a major goal of Nor-Shipping is to aid commerce, contact and communication in our industry. With that in mind, we’ve restructured the floor plan of Nor-Shipping for 2009. Along with the familiar national pavilions (which will – in large part – remain in the same location), we launch five thematic halls, each with a media partner.

The thematic halls:
• Electronics, communication and navigation, hosted by Marine Electronics & Communication (Hall B)
• Safety, hosted by Safety@Sea (Hall C)
• Yards and classification, hosted by Fairplay (Hall D)
• Propulsion, machinery and equipment, hosted by Marine Propulsion (Hall E), and
• Maritime services, ports and logistics, hosted by Lloyd’s List (also Hall E)

Nor-Shipping 2009 offers 20 percent more floor space than the previous exhibition, thanks to a large, new hall. Even with this extended capacity, the event is almost fully booked.

We hope that you find the restructured Nor-Shipping a smarter Nor-Shipping, and an easier place to do business, meet your contacts and share ideas. Come to Nor-Shipping 2009 and join the leaders!

Where: Oslo, Norway

When: June 9-12, 2009

Designed and produced for shipping CEO’s from listed and private shipping companies, brokers, key investors in shipping, bankers and entrepreneurs. The forum has become a regular fixture in the Norwegian shipping calendar since it first introduced in year 2005.

Booming offshore sectors, building the world’s massive orderbook, finding finance in the tight debt market and predicting the future for bulkers and tankers – these were key issues at the 4th Oslo Shipping Forum.

“All the easy oil is gone,” said FloaTEC president Eric Namtvedt, explaining the prospects for the offshore industry and how the hunt for new reserves and the high price of oil is driving the sector. DVB Bank global head for offshore Geir Sjurseth echoed Namtvedt’s views on the financing side.

“I think 2008 will be looked at as the best year ever in dry bulksince World War Two,” said speaker Sverre Bjorn Svenning of Fearnley Consultants. And he says the wet side can thank the Hebei Spirit accident for putting the final nail in the coffin for single-hull tankers.

Opinion on the orderbook was divided into two camps. “We believe in delays, maybe even massive delays, but we expect most of the ships to be built,” said Svenning. The other camp came out especially strong when David Roberts of Fortis and Anthony Zolotas of Eurofin described the credit troubles in the market: how as much as 50% of the $600bn orderbook still lacks financing.

Arild Nodland, founder of the Bergen Risk Solutions, spoke at length on piracy and geopolitical tension. The former United Nations and European Union advisor has master’s degree in international studies and risk analysis and a military background with Nato. Nodland pointed out that one of the biggest factors for geopolitical tension is the presidential elections in the US.

Morits Skaugen Jr, chief executive of IM Skaugen and chairman of the Oslo Maritime Network, served as forum chairman. Grieg International chief executive Elisabeth Grieg, who is also the president of the Norwegian Shipowner’s Association, was the keynote speaker.

Conference overview

In collaboration with Nor-Shipping 2009, the OSJ Conference at Nor-Shipping is a one-day programme focusing on using technology to meet the evolving requirements of oil companies, and how operators of offshore support vessels can make use of this to provide a competitive advantage, work more cost-effectively and efficiently, win new business, enhance the bottom line, and make life at sea safer.

OSJ Conference at Norshipping

Riviera Maritime Media Ltd has responded to the need for a long-overdue event which focuses entirely on OSV technology. In an industry where advances have been rapid and pioneering to keep pace with demand, the time and location for discussing the opportunities that new technology offers and the challenges to be overcome could not be better.

Held in partnership with Nor-Shipping, the one-day conference aims to attract an international audience of representatives from oil majors, shipowners, ship operators, ship designers, shipbuilders, regulators, equipment and service providers, many of whom are expected to attend Nor-Shipping specifically for the conference.

The event will build on the Offshore Support Journal’s well respected Annual OSJ Conference and will follow the proven format of 20 minute presentations by a selected panel of industry heavyweights – including input from shipowners – followed by a lively debate on the key issues and the potential solutions which may have a direct impact on your business.

This is the ideal opportunity to combine your visit to Nor-Shipping with an event specifically concentrating on your business area.

The Norwegian Hosted Buyers Programme

Conveniently arranged for leading maritime industry figures attending Nor-Shipping, the Norwegian Hosted Buyers Programme takes place in Oslo on 8 June 2009, the day before the exhibition officially opens. Hosted in association with the eminent industry organisation NME (the Association of Norwegian Maritime Exporters), the programme will follow the same proven format as the successful Gastech LNG World Shipping Hosted Buyers Programme.

Bringing together key buyers and sellers for private meetings in one place, and alongside a major industry exhibition like Nor-Shipping, is both time and cost effective for the attendees.

Take the opportunity to forge business links that can only be achieved from individual face-to-face meetings between buyers and sellers.

Your meetings schedules are designed to achieve the following at a time when efficiencies are essential:
• enrich existing or new business relations
• meet corporate demands
• enable huge savings on time, human resources and money spent on global travel.

Two intensive days to fully explore the range of Risk Management Strategies:

* Identify the full range of potential risks to your business
* Examine and compare traditional methods of risk management
* Explore the latest derivative tools used in shipping
* Assess the best use of freight futures and FFAs
* Analyse the effect of fluctuations in freight rates, bunker prices, interest rates, foreign exchange rates and vessel value prices

Plus

* Analytical, practical examples of hedging risks are presented in every case

12 Hours CPD: The Solicitors Regulation Authority
Why you should attend:

In today’s highly volatile and risky business environment it is imperative for businesses to be able to accurately identify sources of risk and be armed with the tools to deal with them effectively.

Implementing risk management strategies in our increasingly sophisticated and competitive environment can often make the difference between surviving or failing, and almost certainly gives companies a competitive advantage and the ability to increase profitability.

This course, which was first introduced internationally by its course leaders in 2004, is now brought to you for the first time as a series in London, Hamburg, Oslo and other locations. Already established as a world-leader in shipping derivatives education, the aim of this programme is to provide high quality training in the areas of derivatives and risk management in shipping.

Traditional methods of risk management and more recent derivatives tools will be explored through this unique programme. The course has been designed to draw on the experience and high quality work of Professor Manolis Kavussanos of Athens University of Economics and Business (ASSOE) and Assistant Professor Ilias Visvikis of ALBA Graduate Business School. More than ten years’ pioneering work is embedded in the program, which brings market participants to the forefront of developments in the areas of risk management and derivatives in shipping.
Why this course?

Combining academic rigor with the practical knowledge, this course offers essential skills and guidance to company personnel wishing to implement shipping derivatives for risk management purposes. It reflects all recent developments in the area of shipping derivatives, by continuous reviewing and updating of its curriculum. The course includes practical examples with real data covering every aspect of risk in shipping, hands on simulations, exercises and discussions using small group discussions to maximise interaction.

Past delegates have included dry-bulk and wet-bulk sectors, container shipping, cruise lines, passenger shipping, ship registers, shipbroking, banks, fund managers, lawyers and insurers.
